Original co-publishers of "Animal Research Saves Lives", the leaflet that has been fully rebutted by the book Animal Research Takes Lives - Humans and Animals Both Suffer. The Cancer Society supports and finances vivisection, funding experiments on animals which included in 1991 a grant of $182 462.30 to vivisector M.V. Berridge of the Malaghan Institute in Wellington for experiments on mice. The Cancer Society has failed to acknowledge the scientific evidence against vivisection contained in the rebuttal to their pro-vivisection propaganda and attempt to divert any debate to the topic of animal rights. When challenged on National Radio’s Morning Report to respond to Doctor Irwin Bross’ statement contained in the NZAVS Press Release that "the animal model system in cancer research has been a total failure". The Cancer Society Research Director, Doctor Baguley, slanderously replied "That’s a fraudulent statement, but it’s hard to argue off the cuff about that". He then moved onto the next topic, showing that when challenged on scientific grounds the vivisectors are unable to defend themselves. Meanwhile the Cancer Society continue raising money from sausage sizzles despite the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine stating that a cancer prevention diet should contain no more than 15% fat and should be vegetarian. Should the Cancer Society start advocating vegetarian diets it could have an effect on their sponsorship from organisations such as the Meat Marketing Board. The Cancer Society discourages natural medicine, natural cures that already exist and many forms of cancer prevention. Instead it promotes the products of multi-national drug companies. There are probably more people making money out of cancer than there are suffering from the disease.

"A solution to cancer would mean the termination of research programs, the obsolescence of skills, the end of dreams of personal glory, triumph over cancer would dry up contributions to self-perpetuating charities… it would mortally threaten the present clinical establishment by rendering obsolete the expensive surgical, radiological and chemotherapeutic treatments in which so much money, training and equipment is invested. Such fear, however unconscious, may result in resistance and hostility to alternative approaches in proportion as they are therapeutically promising. The new therapy must be disbelieved, denied, discouraged and disallowed at all costs, regardless of actual testing results and preferably without any testing at all."

Knowledge of cancer causation by chemicals originates from clinical observations, in 1775, of chimney sweeps. According to the World Health Organisation at least 80% of cancer deaths are due to environmental poisons. Carcinogenic material is now in the air we breathe, in the food we eat, the water we drink, the medicines we take…

The alibi that allows these poisons to continue to be produced is vivisection. The products can be marketed after being ‘tested’ on animals and found ‘safe’. Then when cancers result, the manufacturers and marketers. can fall back on the excuse that ‘all the required tests had been carried out’.

A further accusation against the validity of animal experiments comes from the very bastion of vivisection, the British Toxicology Society, in a submission to the British House of Commons Agriculture Committee enquiry into pesticides and human health. Chaired by Sir Richard Body M.P. on July 23 1987:

"There is no reliable method to extrapolate data between different laboratory animal species and between laboratory animal species and man. Animal testing can produce misleading results."

In New Zealand, which was the last country to produce the chemical 2,4,5-T, when the product was found to have the same deleterious effect on people as it did on rabbits in Dow vivisection laboratories, the firm was publicly chastised for continuing its distribution, upon which, like its relative the British Toxicology Society, it did an about-face and defended continued production of 2,4,5-T arguing that animal experiments were not conclusive!

Thus the vivisectors, time after time, promote animal experiments to their advantage when they wish to continue production of material that is harmful - yet this is the precise system they use to create the alibi that a product is safe>.

The antibiotic drug Chloramphenicol was responsible for causing leukemia and fatal aplastic anaemia in human beings.

"The drug was tried out for long periods on dogs and found to produce only a transient anaemia, but fatal results have followed its use in human disease…"

"Two high powered-promoters were pushing a study which used a particular drug called ‘5-FU’. They presented animal data to support their claims for using this drug on human breast cancer. In our studies which included 5-FU, the doctors had unanimously decided to drop it because there was no sign of any benefit but very serious toxicity… My efforts to head off the poisoning of hundreds of women with breast cancer, with a dangerous drug that could destroy their host defence systems failed. The National Cancer Institute went right ahead with its plan to fund this deadly study and others like it. Not a few women with breast cancer have paid for their lives for this stupidity… animal model systems not only kill animals, they also kill humans.
