The New Zealand Heart Foundation

Original co-publishers of Animal Research Saves Lives, the leaflet that has been fully rebutted by the book Animal Research Takes Lives - Humans and Animals Both Suffer. The NZ Heart Foundation funds and promotes vivisection in New Zealand. Has had leaflets sponsored by vivisectors Roche.

In 'Animal Research Saves Lives', the Heart Foundation claims that:

"Because dog hearts are similar to our own, they are ideal for the study of ways to prevent diseases of the heart and arteries"

A quick look at the facts shows otherwise:

"Dogs hearts have been extensively used in heart research, but their coronary arteries differ from those of humans - they have smaller connections with one another and the left coronary artery dominates, while in humans, the right does so. In addition the conduction system has a different pattern of blood supply, and consequently, researchers have had difficulty in producing ischemic heart blocks in dogs, which occurs frequently in humans. The blood coagulation mechanism is unlike ours, therefore using dogs to test prosthetic devices and valves is unreliable. A dog's reaction to shock is also very different to that of humans."

"After massive blood loss a dog's intestines are congested, while in humans we see pallor and ischemia. No wonder conclusions from dog experiments extrapolated to human beings frequently brings about catastrophic results and regrettable failures, which occurred with the earlier models of heart valves and in the first several years of using the heart-lung machine. For the benefit of medical science vivisection should be stopped. We must put an end to the medical fraud of vivisection

Coronary bypass surgery: Retarded by animal research, first success based on clinical research.
Heart transplant: Experiments on dogs disastrous, survival rate increased due to clinical experience. All transplantation is a confession of failure of prevention, early diagnosis and treatment.
EEG: Not a result of animal experimentation.
Floating cardiac catheter: Developed through clinical trials.
CPR: Developed by experiments on human cadavers.
Caged ball valve: Almost discarded as it killed all experimental dogs. Successful in humans.
Pacemaker: Methods developed on dogs failed to cross the species. Eventually devised through clinical observation.
Eraldin: Toxicity 'tests' in rats, dogs, mice and rabbits led ICI to believe that this heart drug "is remarkably free from toxic effects". In humans toxic effects such as blindness and deaths occurred to over 7,000 people in the United Kingdom.
Oral contraceptives: Found to increase the risk of blood clots in humans leading to heart attacks etc. By 1980 over 400 human deaths reported. In rats and dogs the oral contraceptive produced the opposite effect making it more difficult for the blood to clot.
