There is something sick and immoral about a judicial system which allows gross cruelty to innocent animals - and incarcerates those who try to fight against it:

Callous murderer Singh Gill keeps 2000 arctic blue and shadow foxes in a living hell . For their entire lives they are confined in mesh cages, 2ft by 3ft. Even the floors are mesh. The psychological damage to these pathetic creatures, and the severe deformities of their limbs is incalculable.

There is no mercy even in death. They are placed in an air-tight building and exhaust fumes from a nearby van are pumped through a small hole. They gasp and choke their lives away until release comes. Freedom from a cruel, uncaring world and a lifetime of misery and torture. As millions die, millions more take their place on the roller coaster of suffering and terror. And greedy fat businessmen like Singh Gill count their filthy profits.

In January last young Andrew Horbury "rescued" 30 arctic blue foxes and smashed some of Gill's equipment. He was unfortunately traced by the police and was held and questioned for four days and 4 nights as the police tried unsuccessfully to betray his colleagues, to inform them on the whereabouts of the animals.

Finally this young hero who has sacrificed so much for his beliefs was sentenced to two years imprisonment... And thanks to Andrew thirty beautiful arctic foxes which were destined for the cruel and bloody fur trade have been re-homed and are now living out their lives in freedom and compassion.

NZAVS intends to send a donation to Andrew's Defence Fund. It will buy a few books, magazines and maybe some vegan food. In main it is a gesture of solidarity and support... to let him know that as far away as New Zealand there are those who know he is right and who admire him for his courage... Andrew will of course receive this Mobilise!.

The RSPCA in England announced at their June 1984 AGM:

"This Annual General Meeting commends to members of society and particularly to RSPCA Council members and staff, the adoption of a humane diet without the consumption of animal products."

The West German Federal Health Office has accepted an "approximate LD50" rather than the formal LD50 values. The number of animals used in acute toxicity tests in West Germany is now down by 75%.

NZAVS seeks abolition of... ALL... toxicity tests on animals.

Kindly Dr David Bellamy who won all our hearts in his stand against the destruction of the Tasmanian tropical rainforests is a scientist of high repute and, one would imagine, has considerable sympathy with the world of animals as well as plants.

It is disappointing to note Dr Bellamy's views on the subject of vivisection:

"You (the veterinary profession) are the profession with real clout. You can guide the public's thinking on the right lines, you can put over the truth as no-one else can: the veterinary profession should be shouting from the rooftops the benefits, to both humans and animals, of necessary research on live animals. Put the rational view forward to your clients. If your voices do not say these things, the man in the street will continue to be bewildered and probably misled. The public desperately needs to know what is right and what is wrong, or they may increasingly support the idiots who steal experimental dogs or let 2000 mink out into the environment. The veterinary profession, via their clients, via the media, via local newspapers, should be putting the rational view."

"Scientists should insist on the liberty to carry out whatever experiments they choose without consideration of relevance, merit or the degree of suffering caused."

Stated British scientist and spokesperson for the Research Defence Society, J.E. Pascoe
Isn't he in for a surprise?
