The following extract from the newsletter of the Animal Defence League of Canada - May 1984 indicates how the New Zealand polio vaccine scandal reverberated around the world:

New Zealand / Canada vaccine scandal

Last year there was a tremendous furor in New Zealand when it was discovered that 80% of their population had been vaccinated with SV40 monkey-virus contaminated polio vaccine in 1962-63. The vaccine had been purchased from Canada. Monkey kidney cell cultures are notorious for viral contamination, which may cause cancer, multiple sclerosis and other ills in the recipient as much as 20 years after vaccination.

Although the New Zealand Health Department had been informed of the contamination before the vaccine was sold to them, their Epidemiology Advisory Committee nevertheless recommended buying the vaccine (which was much cheaper than clean vaccine from Pfizer in Britain). New Zealand Truth newspaper, Wellington, March 1983 claims that New Zealand is now experiencing...

... The highest rate of multiple sclerosis in the world.

Truth asks Connaught why they supplied New Zealand with contaminated vaccine while providing virus-free stock for Canada.

The following points will interest readers:

1. At time of tender (to Connaught Laboratories) the New Zealand Health Department had been aware of the danger of SV40 virus and warned not to purchase the vaccine.
2. At the time of Truth investigation the tender documents had been destroyed.
3. The cost of contaminated vaccine was 5 1/2 pence per dose. The cost of "clean" Pfizer vaccine was two shillings and one penny per dose.
4. NZAVS investigations (January 1986) brings extreme doubt that all five recommendations resulting form the expert inquiry committee of the NZ Health Department were ever implemented.

In Vaccines - Vital or Vulnerable Archie Kalokerinos and Glenn Dettman report on health teams sweeping into Alice Springs with mass ill-advised immunisation programmes directed at Aboriginal babies and infants. The disasters. The deaths. The few survivors... "it is a wonder" they state "that any survived".

In The Hazards of Immunisation, Sir Graham Wilson reveals that countless thousands of soldiers died in P.O.W. Camps in the Second World War.. as a result of vaccinations.. The following are his words:

"We urge you to remember, you, your child or somebody in your family may be the next victim of the medical profession's abysmal blindness and disturbing commitment to their sacred cow...

"I gave up on the polio vaccine when Jonas Salk showed that the best way to catch polio in the United States was to be near a child who recently had taken the sabin vaccine"
