Parliament

When "Hidden Crimes" was screened in the New Zealand Parliament on Tuesday 23 September 1986 the Society was represented by Stuart Chandler, Margaret Gibbins, Pam Manson, Bette and John Overell, Fiona Tait, Andrew South and Lloyd Rodda (from Dunedin). The event was reported in the Dominion on Thursday 25 September and the following week's Listener, after which the Society was approached by several parliamentarians for whom private viewings have been organised. NZAVS is deeply indebted to MP Mr John Terris for organising the event.

Nelson

Abolition could be a reality of today rather than a target of tomorrow if everyone worked as hard as the dedicated and determined Nelson group.

The photograph shows Doreen Hills and Ruth Richards at the World Animal Day information stand outside Nathans and is only one of the many venues undertaken by NZAVS Nelson.

Miss Taylor reports that the screening of Hidden Crimes made a tremendous impact on the Christchurch public and resulted in 14 letters to the Press.

Hawkes Bay

Mary Lange - Hastings, has organised several screenings of Hidden Crimes at which interested audiences included MP David Butcher

Thousands of visitors to the Hawkes Bay Three Day Show became aware, through seeing Hidden Crimes of the atrocities being meted out to animals in the world's vivisection laboratories with the result that membership steadily increases in that area.

Acknowledgements are made for the efforts of Jamie Lange, Linda Rosvall, Sharon Beaumont, Barbara Redwood and Karl Dixon. Members Terry Dickerson, Rev. Cherie Baker and Peter Lawson assisted greatly in the success of the occasion.

John Kirkbridge, Dominion TV Rentals, Hastings... has repeatedly set up the video equipment for Hastings screenings for which NZAVS is extremely grateful.

From Dunedin. Geoff Barnett reports:

"Viewers watching Hidden Crimes in the Plaza Mall, were totally absorbed by its power, clarity and obvious truth. Many passers-by pausing to view for a few moments became transfixed to the screen to conclusion of the film. If these people can pass on in words the impact of this video then surely the anti-vivisection message will spread like a forest fire. One picture is worth a thousand words... if enough people act positively after their experience of Hidden Crimes - then one picture may save thousands of animal lives."

Thelma Neill reports several successful public screenings of Hidden Crimes which has also been presented to medical students at Otago Medical School. Geoff Barnett challenged the Knapp Bill in an excellent article in the ODT on 15/10/86 and Peter Nicholls made a significant contribution to the cause with his exhibition of anti-vivisection drawings at the Carnegie Centre during the last week of October. Hardworking Thelma Neill acknowledges the efforts of her colleagues with special thanks to Lloyd Rodda for his financial assistance.
