Boycott Burger King

Cow in a burger

NZAVS members who saw Burger King and McDonald's on the news recently will be interested to learn that the Society supported the American Veal Boycott Coalition earlier in the year. This was organised by approximately thirty animal protection groups who protested the introduction of vealburgers by Burger King, the largest national fast food chain. Picketing of this firm's outlets has taken place in many American cities. If the veal-burger scheme got underway without opposition this totally unacceptable and cruel form of animal abuse may well spread to New Zealand. We were pleased to support our friends overseas and on their behalf the NZAVS has had an inter-change of letters with Burger King decrying their exploitation of these baby animals.

On 6 September the NZAVS requested information from the Minister of Internal Affairs on how much of the $750,000 allocation by the NZ Lottery Board to the Medical Research Distribution Committee in 1982/83 will be spent on vivisection. We have received news that the Medical Research Distribution Committee are preparing their report. No doubt this will be interesting.

The National Heart Foundation of NZ is marketing Christmas Puddings. NZAVS enquiries reveal profits spent on vivisection of dogs and piglets... therefore members are asked not to support this scheme.
