"Any Green Party or ecology movement that does not clearly assert the abolition of animal vivisection as its No. 1 theme, is fake and bogus." A Proclamation of Fundamental Animal Rights was adopted by the National working group of the West German Green Party in connection with the creation of a Green European Group for the Defence of Animals in April 1989. It was drawn up in accordance with the principle of nonviolence contained in the basic concept of The Green Party and embodied in the great advocate of nonviolence Mahatma Ghandi and Leo Tolstoy. It consists of seventeen articles... ... Article 14 reads: "Animal experiments, as an extreme expression of violence against animals and a significant element of a science which is based upon the model of violence, contravene the rights of both humans and animals. ... Article 16 reads: "The fulfilment of the fundamental rights of animals must be taken up as a national objective within the constitutions of the nations. It is the duty of governments to promote the fulfilment of these rights at a national and international level." NZAVS will be watching with interest the progress of New Zealand's newly-formed Green Party. |
