Battery farming... no cruelty?

Since it is only the female chick which will grow up to become the egg-laying profit-making machine for battery farmers, the male chicks are unwanted - so what is their fate?

A report in Animals International (11/6/82) that:

"at worst they are placed in plastic bags and thrown out with other waste on garbage dumps to die of suffocation if they are not previously crushed in the bag by bulldozers... they can also be passed through a grinder or crusher".
