Mobilise! No. 3, February 1983

Society Happenings

On 4 November 1982 during interviews over Radio Windy and 2YA I was stunned by the ignorance of the media who appear unable to grasp the extent of world uprising against vivisection... unable to understand that this is an issue of prime importance - with hundreds of thousands of people questioning the rights of human beings to abuse animals. Unable to accept that it is not justifiable to use animals as laboratory tools.

In the past few decades laws have been introduced to protect human beings from oppression on the basis of race and sex. One more step is needed to protect non-humans being currently oppressed on the basis of species.

On 6 November 1982 Natalie Taylor, Christchurch Coordinator chaired a meeting of NZAVS members at the residence of Vanna Limic. Miss Taylor reports that among subjects discussed was the concern felt by some members who found it difficult to answer the many questions on vivisection with which they are confronted. She stated the necessity of members purchasing copies of Slaughter of the Innocent and Naked Empress (http://www.nzavs.org.nz/materials/naked.html) and of the importance of thoroughly reading both those and Mobilise! which contains current news on global issues. Miss Taylor reports this was a very successful meeting and acknowledges with thanks the hospitality of Mrs Limic.

On 12 November 1982 a NZAVS team under the organisation of Miss Taylor distributed hundreds of leaflets at the entrance to the show-grounds of the Royal Agriculture Show at the Christchurch Addington Showgrounds. Miss Taylor wishes to acknowledge the participants' commendable approach to the public which made this a most successful leafletting day (and a good image for NZAVS.)

The time for animals has arrived

On 15 December 1982 Yvonne Gray undertook position of NZAVS Coordinator, Nelson District. At a meeting of 15 people NZAVS policy was discussed and a core group was formed and activities planned. Congratulations Yvonne for your efforts to date and best wishes to you and your team.

On 27 December 1982 a small gathering of Wellington members met at the residence of Bette Overell in Wellington. Refreshments were enjoyed as guests mingled informally. Natalie Taylor, the NZAVS Christchurch Co-ordinator spoke briefly about the splendid work being accomplished by Christchurch members writing to The Press, Woman's Weekly and other publications. She mentioned the enthusiastic younger age-group and the fine efforts of the leafletting team. A short discussion took place on various aspects of the Society's activities.
