Bette Overell's address to the Primary Production Committee
(Continued from previous page)

"Mr Chairman I would now like to demonstrate the policy of the combined leagues which is seen quickly and easily from the chart..."

Demonstration of "Scientific Anti-Vivisectionism" taken from NZAVS transposition of Prof. Croce's address "Future Medical Research Without the Use of Animals: Facing the Challenge". Presented to the International Congress of Doctors Against Vivisection held at Tel Aviv, Israel, on May 15-16 1991.

"... Mr Chairman, thousands of doctors are acknowledging, and a few politicians are realising, the giant fraud behind vivisection. It is a river of gold which will dry up should funds be diverted from the crucifixion of animals to the legitimate study of man and his circumstance. Dr Martin Fincke of the University of Passau, after investigation, wrote a book saying that the entire medical profession should be brought to court on a charge of multiple murder. That vivisection is merely an alibi to enable continuance of the phoney but gold-plated vivisection industry.

Doctors advocating the abolition of vivisection on scientific grounds at such a public level risk censure and persecution. They are non-conformists and they are ostracised. In many instances they could lose prestige and suffer great difficulty in obtaining research funds for non-animal research. Why? Because they are up against the vested interests...

The drug companies are not the only beneficiaries of vivisection. Each year millions of animals are created and sold off the assembly-line like inanimate objects in one of the biggest industries the world has ever known. Modified animals can be purchased with up to 17 surgical operations performed on them. There are the ancillary industries providing all the paraphernalia, from hysterectomy hoods for germ-free animals to incinerators to burn their bodies. Charles River breeding laboratories makes an average of $50 million net sales of laboratory animals every year.

As in history the true scientists were successful in proving to the unbelievers that the world is round not flat, so the doctors against vivisection will grow in number as more and more join their ranks. Now the public on a general level are alerted to the fraud nothing can stop the tide turning and soon it will be more prestigious to be a doctor against vivisection than to belong to the old archaic school of deceit.

The British Medical Journal, October 8 1955, page 867 stated:

'The history of medicine has shown that, whenever medicine has strayed from clinical observation, the result has been chaos, stagnation and disaster.'

Mr Chairman. This brings me back to Fenoterol. Tested on animals, Fenoterol was finally withdrawn in New Zealand last week, on 13 March 1991, because it killed patients instead of curing them.

I trust you will give fair time and consideration to the evidence of the following witnesses."
