In November 1990 the NZ MAF commenced a bulk mailing from Parliament of the booklet Animal Research Saves Lives - Humans and Animals Both Benefit. MAF's co-producers of this advertising stunt, which was aimed at destroying the anti-vivisection movement of this country, included: The Cancer Society of NZ, The NZ Heart Foundation, the Medical Research Council of NZ and the Agricultural Chemical and Animal Remedies Manufacturers' Association of NZ (AGCARM).

Over two years' exhaustive effort has gone into producing NZAVS rebuttal to the blatant lies of ARSL, which results in a 368 paged fully case bound book appropriately titled "Animal Research Takes Lives - Humans and Animals BothSuffer"

In this book all ARSL's claims are demolished with meticulously documented and sourced evidence. Its text, which is interspersed with photographs of NZAVS campaigns exposes:

  • That the production of ARSL was part of a world-wide conspiracy to demolish the growing anti-vivisection movement
  • That ARSL's co-publishers The Cancer Society of NZ, The NZ Heart Foundation, the Medical Research Council of NZ and the Agricultural Chemical and Animal Remedies Manufacturers' Association of NZ (AGCARM is the multinational vivisection industry and exposes their identities
  • That MAF (ie the NZ Government) is simultaneously the vivisector, the legislator and the lawmaker
  • That the NZ Law on animal experiments consists of a crooked peer-review system which decides, monitors and reviews the necessity for, and the carrying out, of their own experiments
  • That many vivisectors are now opposing the vivisection method and principle
  • That the NZ Government sanctioned the testing of cancer-forming drugs on thousands of New Zealand women without their consent or knowledge
  • That Thalidomide was secretly tested on children. That the drug's producers continued to dispense and sell it for eight years after receiving warnings of malformations.

The book is a major milestone in the war against vivisection and the only book of its kind to be produced in Australasia. It is an excellent reference book that could save your life and the lives of your loved ones. Written by Bette Overell, Founder and President of NZAVS since the Society's inception in 1978, it has taken most of the Society's financial resources to produce. Our major campaign beginning 31/3/1993 is therefore to raise funds for:

  • its launch on 24 April 1993 - World Day for Laboratory Animals
  • its presentation to all NZ public libraries, colleges and universities
  • its promotion by our members.

NZAVS has undertaken two major petitions... marched to Parliament on 12 consecutive WDLAs... and many protests, including lobbying politicians... all to no avail . We now rely on our members to help us with the next tactic of dispensing the truth to the public through the distribution of the Society's publication:
