The 1993 NZAVS Campaign against the Cancer Society of New Zealand

Daffodil Day Appeal
A report from Phil Clayton

"Attempts were made to involve all districts in our Daffodil Day campaign, with samples of posters and leaflets despatched to coordinators asking them to organise actions in their areas.

Excellent cooperation was received from the following districts: Hamilton, Taupo, Wairarapa, Kapiti Coast, Nelson and Christchurch where postering and leafletting were carried out and the media contacted.

In Wellington, in addition to the above actions protesters acted out street theatre outside the offices of the Cancer Society of New Zealand. The actors, dressed as 'scientists' profiting from vivisection highlighted the danger to human health ensuing from vivisection and the financial profits made by the vivisection industry.

On Daffodil Day representatives of the Cancer Society on their daffodil stalls were exasperated when teams of NZAVS members unfurled banners inviting members of the public to ask questions and view the book Animal Research Takes Lives - Humans and Animals Both Suffer. This happening in front of all Wellington Cancer Society stalls - two teams going full-belt.

Debra Ashton organised a bookstall outside the Wellington Public Library which gave the public a further opportunity to peruse Bette Overell's recent publication. During the lunch-hours sausage sizzles were held to help raise funds for the Cancer Society - whilst NZAVS members enlightened the public that a diet of sausages and bacon is deemed by doctors to be a major factor in the cause of many cancers!

During the week leading up to Daffodil Day I was pleased to represent NZAVS in many interviews including live nationwide television and radio. I wish to thank everyone who helped out... There isn't enough room in Mobilise! to thank and acknowledge individually all who participated in the Daffodil Day demonstrations - so please accept this as my appreciation."
