On Sunday 28 November 1993 the Cancer Society of NZ put on yet another fund-raising event. A 5km fun run held on the Wellington waterfront, with all the money raised
which includes experiments on animals. A small, low-key squad of NZAVS members volunteered to put their lives at risk by leafletting the abolitionist message to approximately seven hundred die-hard Cancer Society supporters who believe the lies that Society disseminates to the public. Undeterred by the entire weight of the army, navy, air force, police, fire service and their various brass bands, New World supermarkets, Canadian Airlines, the Evening Post, Dominion and many radio stations which supported the event, the NZAVS squad joined the runners stepping out against cancer by distributing information urging them not to donate to this fraudulent charity which advocates the improvement of health through animal experiments. Fortunately the anticipated trouble did not eventuate. |

Human Population Studies An interesting study on the prevention of cancer has been carried out in China involving 30,000 people living in rural villages who suffer an unusual form of stomach cancer. Over a period of five years healthy adults aged between 40 and 69 were divided into four groups according to the combination of vitamin and mineral supplements prescribed. Those who took vitamin A and zinc developed 21 percent less stomach cancer than those given other vitamins. Overall researchers concluded they found the risk of death from all forms of cancer 13 percent less among those taking supplementary vitamins especially a daily pill containing beta carotene, vitamin E and selenium.
