Approximately 70-80 anti-vivisectionists braved the cold conditions and marched through the main street of Dunedin to the Octagon, led by Karen Simpson and Betty Buchanan. At the conclusion of the march Geoffrey Barnett gave an excellent speech to an enthusiastic audience, he spoke regarding the LD50 Test and many people were visibly moved. Pamphlets were distributed during the march, and the response to LD50 test petition was very encouraging. (from Dunedin group). |

Wanganui Despite the all-encompassing presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales, Wanganui anti-vivisectionists under the leadership of Coordinator Debbie Botten organised a display of A/V literature and distributed NZAVS LD50 Petition forms. The following notice appeared in both Wanganui papers. Thank you Debbie... and so the seeds are sown! "Theme of display Palmerston North "Manning my one-man stall outside the Post Office complete with the display board and sandwich board I received a positive and heartening response from passers by. Roughly 200 signatures and many leaflets were handed out. The lovely thing is that a seed of awareness into the reality of animal torture has been sown in a few peoples' hearts. One young street kid, for example was shocked and angry when told that dogs are commonly used for experimentation. He 'owns' a dog. The fact that people were emotionally responding to the realities of vivisection when explained to them or seen on a poster, is, for me, the most heartening thing." Gisborne Do you bank with the Bank of NZ. If so how about a change? After previously arranging permission for NZAVS Gisborne Coordinator to hold a display of literature on their premises for WDLA 22 April the permission was refused at the last minute because the bank thought the issue "controversial". They were also concerned that some of their clients may become "shocked" or "upset". |
