"The Committee has no wish to discontinue the use of animals in schools..."
Even at first glance, the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee's Report to its boss MAF, dated July 1994, listing the reported number of animals used from 1987 to 1992, is ambiguous. On the Schedule of Species 12 primates are listed used in 1992. On the corresponding list of agencies (this page) these primates are not shown. As the numbers correlate on both schedules to a total of 1,377,458 animals, we conclude that they are hidden in the "etc" at the tail-end of "all other species". Your editor mentions this as New Zealand has always stated emphatically that primates are not used in experiments in this country. On page 7 of the Report is written:
"NAEAC has been concerned about the use of animals in schools. The Committee has no wish to discourage the use of animals in schools..." (Not surprising as without "the use of animals" they would be out of their jobs... editor.)
