Before closing the subject of this Petition two more points must be made: A single M.P., Mr John Terris assisted the writer by acting as intermediary with the various chairmen of the PPC. Mr Terris also organised the screening of Hidden Crimes in Parliament, was 'at home' on the steps of Parliament year after year to welcome and greet marchers where he listened to lengthy speeches, sometimes in foul weather, and through this long and bitter period was always available to the writer with a genuine interest in the affairs of NZAVS. Adrienne Hall of SAFE became Mr Terris' secretary! Thus Hall would have access to the writer's dealings with Mr Terris and be aware of many of the Society's moves. Fortunately the position was short-lived and the next strategic manoeuvre she made was to become assistant to the Director of the Wellington SPCA, a position from which she took full advantage to enhance her image as tireless campaigner for animal rights. Though SAFE did all in its power to hinder NZAVS in its struggle for abolition which spanned 17 years, and its representatives no more thought of rebelling against the vivisectors as they would against bad weather or a cold in the head, immediately the second petition disappeared, Hall, who had entered the scene six years earlier with the roar of a lion, like her predecessor slipped out without so much as a whimper... At which time the writer, predictably received a note from SAFE suggesting that:
(Letter to NZAVS dated 17 August 1991.) As stated, the refusal of politicians to treat NZAVS Petition with its due respect is understood more clearly in hindsight. Today it is crystal clear. NZAVS was an army whose enemy had no need to come to the war! |
