24th April 1984 From Dunedin "We more than tripled our turnout on April 24 this year. If we can maintain that increase each year the whole population of New Zealand will be marching in about eight years." "A beautiful autumn day... approximately 200 anti-vivisectionists marched through the city to the Octagon where Geoffrey Barnett gave an excellent address which coincided with the Wellington, Christchurch and Nelson demonstrations." From Nelson "The Twentyfourth of April 1984... A fine sunny day in Nelson with the streets crowded with Easter shoppers. This was no ordinary day - but an important day in Nelson's history. The First ever march for animals! Approximately 100 members and supporters of the 14 month established Nelson branch NZAVS marched through the city to Cathedral Steps where addresses were presented by Yvonne Gray (NZAVS Coordinator), Penny Archer, Hank Heinekamp and Arch-Deacon Owen Kimberely. At precisely 1pm to coincide with the presentation to Parliament in Wellington of the LD50 Petition balloons were released to symbolise the liberation of animals... (Continued next page) |
