World Day for Laboratory Animals

24th April 1984

From Dunedin

"We more than tripled our turnout on April 24 this year. If we can maintain that increase each year the whole population of New Zealand will be marching in about eight years."
- Geoffrey Barnett
"A beautiful autumn day... approximately 200 anti-vivisectionists marched through the city to the Octagon where Geoffrey Barnett gave an excellent address which coincided with the Wellington, Christchurch and Nelson demonstrations."
- Glenda James
"It was magnificent. The best march so far in Dunedin."
- Thelma

From Christchurch

"In four years this is the most successful march I have organised in Christchurch."

"Accompanied by Leonie Watson beating a drum I led approximately 200 NZAVS members and supporters to the Christchurch Anglican Cathedral - where for the first time the Bishop of Christchurch had granted permission for me to speak on the plight of the animals and the work of the New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society. My address was well received as the work of the Society is becoming increasingly well known."
- Natalie Taylor
"This was a wonderfully organised march. Miss Taylor's speech from the rostrum was magnificent and well and clearly presented."
- Stan Wade

From Nelson

"The Twentyfourth of April 1984... A fine sunny day in Nelson with the streets crowded with Easter shoppers. This was no ordinary day - but an important day in Nelson's history. The First ever march for animals! Approximately 100 members and supporters of the 14 month established Nelson branch NZAVS marched through the city to Cathedral Steps where addresses were presented by Yvonne Gray (NZAVS Coordinator), Penny Archer, Hank Heinekamp and Arch-Deacon Owen Kimberely. At precisely 1pm to coincide with the presentation to Parliament in Wellington of the LD50 Petition balloons were released to symbolise the liberation of animals...
... and afterwards...
A feeling of enthusiasm, commitment, and a spark of hope for the future."
